Gen Yamamoto

Gen uses fresh ingredients for his cocktails and claims everything is made from inspiration. All 6 cocktails we ordered had 1 base ingredient with 1 liquor and was topped with 1 last ingredient. I enjoyed each cocktail; however, I felt it's a bit overhyped. Definitely also on the pricey end for the drinks.

Lovely interior. Gem is a wonderful host, and serves some drinks to truly savour. Four out of six worked for me but all of them challenge your palette in an interesting way and are surprisingly light, giving the more delicate flavours room to emerge. Some might find the servings a little small but this is a tasting experience after all. Steep at ¥6,500 for a flight of 6, but it took us weeks to get a booking so you can't really complain!The only criticism you can level at GY is that while it's awesome, it is almost impossible to match the expectation created by its reputation.

Gen speaks English fluently and has lived abroad, so you'll not only be blown away by his special libations, he will entertain you as well. All cocktails are made in front of you as you enjoy the atmosphere of this cozy little bar.

Great cocktails that are a mix of an interesting/uncommon spirit, and fresh-squeezed fruit/vegetable juice and garnishes. Menu changes seasonally, and you can choose between a 4 or 6-course cocktail serving. The proprietor is very friendly and a master of his craft, and speaks great English due to his many years working at various places in New York.

I think the place is great and special in itself, I put 2-stars because of my personal preference; it is not a bar, it’s rather an experience of taste, which I should have noted before going. You have to order at least 4 drinks per person (which are very small, but expensive), so you better know what you’re getting into. There is no music, it’s very intimate. The cocktails themselves are interesting although too fruit-based for me and have almost no alcohol (I don’t drink to get drunk, but when I go to a good bar, I except to pay for good alcohol).

Had a fantastic, top notch experience at this bar. Not a regular drinker myself but I enjoyed all the cocktails the bar master served that night. Beautiful presentation and amazing variety of original drinks with seasonal fruit and vegetable. Love to re-visit.

This was truly one of the major highlights from our most recent trip to Japan. We were so lucky that our friends invited us to join their reservation to Gen and we can't stop recommending it to others. Gen is a genius at what he does which is crafting the most amazingly unique and delicious cocktail tastings. The flavors he creates with local ingredients is ridiculous. One of my favorites from our tasting included kiwi & kinako! Who thinks of that?! But obviously Gen does! Be sure to make reservations as the space can only accommodate around 14 or 15 guests at a time. Tastings might be considered a bit on the pricier side, but it is completely worth it. We will definitely come back again as drinks are constantly changing to match the seasons and local produce! Also a word to the wise for those who think they want to go here to get drunk. This is not the place for that. Think of it as going to enjoy an artist at work!

Very nice atmosphere and brilliant cocktail design. So much thought and effort goes into each one. Not very boozy but well thought out combinations of seasonally and locally sourced spirits and mixes. We saw everything from winter tomato water as mix to muddled strawberries. Fantastic - highly recommend. Make reservations.

Mind opening experience.I don't think any other great bar can get any simpler than this. Gen-san just mixes fruits and alcohol. No shaking. No measuring. He eye balls the measurements and adjusts accordingly to balance the drink.Most of the cocktails I had in the 6 course tasting only consisted of 2 ingredients (alcohol and mashed/grated fruit). That's the enlightening part for me. Greatly balanced drinks served in his curated glasses. The bar snacks are tasty also.It's a great place to start the night. Drink before eating or an after dinner drinks place. The 6 course menu serve very light cocktails and aren't the usual 3 oz drinks. So you will most likely not get a buzz.I will return here during a different season as his fruits as seasonal.

What a unique experience. Gen is super talented. We did the 6 cocktail tasting. Each one is amazing and tastes so different. I highly recommend this experience. The price is super reasonable as well. Approx $65 per person USD. When in Tokyo I would say this is a must to do with friends. My only suggestion would be to add light low volume jazz music.

Top quality service in an amazing setting.

The perfect zen bar. Gen Yamamoto would be equally at home in a monk's outfit. This is handmade mixology taken to an art form. Go with the 6 course cocktail menu and you'll get everything from seasonal fruits and vegetables to vodka made from whey or rare sakes. I had a single malt whiskey with hand ground apple juice from the cold climes of Mt. Fuji, heated gently in a double boil technique that won't be forgotten. Reservations in advance are must.

The cocktails here are delicious and unique in everyway imaginable. The bar is small and can fit 8 people. The craftsmanship and attention to details are top notch. Highly recommend visiting this location when in Tokyo. Make sure to make reservations as this is a very popular spot for tourists. Owner speaks English and credit cards are accepted.

A fantastic sensory experience of not just nice cocktails. The room is very simple but has an heir of class. Lighting is well thought out to bring attention to the drinks as they are being prepared and the main alcohol (bottle placement). There is no music (very zen) and only the sound of a bamboo fountain trickling water and the white noise hum of the refrigerator... this allows you to experience at an auditory level, the creation of Gen's masterpiece drinks which are somehow complex (exploding with flavours) yet simple at the same time. The six drink taster set is equivalent to 2 glasses of wine so don't be shy even if you're not a strong drinker.

Wow!!!!!!!!! The most creative and amazing cocktails I’ve ever had! You need a reservation 30 days in advance, but it is more than worth the wait. The event is more affordable than I was expecting (about ¥7,500 for the high option). You cannot go wrong at Gen Yamamoto

More cocktail samplers than actual cocktails. As other reviews say, its essentially fruit juice sampling at 5500 yen and there's very little alcohol in any of the shot sized cocktails. It's a silly "omakase" experience that is no way a substitute for a good cocktail bar. Check out the review on tabelog for Japanese reviewers and not English speaking tourists.

Excellent. The overall experience is amazing.Cocktails are small but very good. The atmosphere is very intimate with only 8 seats available.You don’t go to Gen Yamamoto to get wasted but to enjoy very good cocktails made with passion.I highly recommend it.

Choose between 4 and 6 cocktails in this amazing evening experience. The owner / mixologist Gen specializes in fresh fruit and vegetables cocktails. The citrus cocktails were my favorite.Make sure to make reservationsa few days ahead.

To be perfectly honest, NOT worth. We ordered 4 cocktails course that costed us 5,800 yen (including charge fee) for each. Glasses looked bigger in pictures on its review, but they were actually tiny like a sample drink at Costco. Also, it is rather a smoothie booth than a bar. I didn't taste alcohol at all. If you would like to feel ZEN, there are many other excellent places to go in Tokyo. We wondered why it is popular. (On Tabelog it is three stars and a half though)We won't return for sure.

This was one of my favorite Tokyo experiences. I love that Gen takes reservations himself and that you have to call personally! He speaks great English and is very charming! The drinks were fascinating and delicious!

I ordered 6 drinks course. All the cocktails were attended in great detail. Nice bartender will explain all the contents. The portion is small and doesn't contain much alcohol, so 6 drinks is not too much. Better to book early.

Unique and educational experience in a quiet decor. 4-5 drink sets are not a problem as amount of alcohol used is low. Uses real craftsmanship when making and (supposedly) fresh ingredients, so I think the price is justified. Ideas for improvement: Offer a bit more snacks, even if you have to charge extra; drinking 5 drinks might increase your food craving. Also I would appreciate seeing a bit more variety. I've gone 3 times and all excellent and reflected the seasons, but it seems to follow the same general pattern.

Very minimalist vibe but the bartender is an incredibly welcoming, talented host. The cocktails are complex with an beautifully simple composition for each. I’ll be back!

An exceptional experience. Gen is a true master. Once you enter his bar, the journey begins. Beautiful place, very comfortable, and extra fine materials. We chose the 6-coctail set which was a smart choice by us since you can't get enough of Gen's delicious and well thought drinks. For each cocktail Gen is giving an explanation and descriptions of the ingredients. The flavors were so special and unique. Balanced and very richWe had an amazing and one of a kind experience. 4 or 6 cocktail tasting menu based on what the bartender is inspired by. The cocktails that we had are on the lighter side and the cocktails are tasting size (approximately two glasses of wine for the 6 cocktails). The service was great and Gen was very professional. The place is recommendation only so plan in advance!
